Field Hockey Falls in NCAA Tournament Second Round

GRANTHAM, Pa. (November 10, 2018) - The FDU-Florham field hockey team fell to No. 9 Johns Hopkins 4-0 in the NCAA Tournament Second Round Saturday afternoon.

The Devils close out the season with a 18-5 record. The 18 wins set a new school-record, while senior goalkeeper Samantha Rubin ends her career with 48 wins, the most in program history. Johns Hopkins will meet host Messiah at 1:30 tomorrow afternoon with a berth in the Final Four on the line.

The Blue Jays netted two goals in the opening 14 minutes, with the second tally coming off a penalty corner. Hopkins had two additional chances midway through the stanza, but Rubin made a pair of saves. The Blue Jays did break through for a third goal late in the half, as Michaela Corvi scored.

FDU tallied their first shots of the game in the 31st minute, as attempts from senior Brooke Sherwin and junior Maggie Sohns were denied. Johns Hopkins tallied 10 shots over the opening 35 minutes, while FDU had two.

The Devils earned the first two corner attempts of the second half, but Sherwin had a pair of shots blocked. The Devils defensed clamped down, stifling the Blue Jays for the opening part of the second half.  FDU blocked three straight Hopkins attempts, keeping the 3-0 scoreline.

In the 61st minute, senior Makayla Pak and Sohns each notched shots but were stopped by Jodie Baris. The Blue Jays capped off the scoring in the 69th minute, as Alyse Tran netted her third tally of the season. FDU had one final chance, but a Sherwin shot with 1:18 left was blocked.

Sherwin finished with four shots, setting the school record with 287 over her four seasons. Rubin made a pair of saves in the setback, while Sohns also attempted three shots.
