Devils Eliminated by Eagles 3-0

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – The FDU-Florham men's soccer team's season came to an end on Tuesday as the Devils were blanked 3-0 by the top-seeded Eastern University Eagles in the Freedom Conference Tournament Men's Soccer Semifinal.

The Devils (6-10-3, 4-3 Freedom) had several prime scoring opportunities but were unable to find the back of the net as Freedom Conference Player of the Year Eric Giovagnoli delivered two scores and assisted on another in the win for Eastern (15-3, 6-1 Freedom). The Eagles were able to top FDU-Florham after the Devils pulled off the upset last season in the tournament's opening round.

Giovagnoli netted the first goal of the game 23:26 minutes into action when the Eagles were awarded a penalty kick. FDU-Florham only managed three shot attempts, two by Chaz Armand (Westlake, Ga.) in the first stanza and the Eagles held the 1-0 lead at intermission.

In the 51st minute, Giovagnoli came through again when he fired a bullet from the right side of the box, off of the cross bar, which ricocheted into the back of the net. The goal was Giovagnoli's 14th of the season and gave the home team a 2-0 lead.

Armand nearly put the Devils into the scoring column when a bouncing corner kick found him directly in front of Eastern goalkeeper Jamie Stratton. Unfortunately, Armand's shot attempt went directly into Stratton's arms, which kept the deficit at two goals.

The Eagles added an insurance goal in the 78th minute, when Giovagnoli centered a pass behind the Devils defense and Josh Cirocco deposited it into the back of the net.

In the loss, Devils sophomore goalkeeper Nick Mihalik (Wayne, N.J.) made eight stops, while Stratton turned away six shots for the Eagles. Eastern held a 20-10 advantage in shot attempts, including 11-6 edge in shots on goal.
